Canada Express Entry: Eligibility Requirements Explained

Express Entry is Canada’s primary system for managing skilled worker permanent residence applications. It manages three federal programs and is the fastest route to Canadian PR for most skilled professionals.

The Three Express Entry Programs

1. Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP)

For skilled workers with foreign work experience. Minimum 67 points on the FSWP selection grid and at least 1 year of continuous skilled work experience in the past 10 years.

2. Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP)

For skilled trades workers. Requires a valid job offer or certificate of qualification, plus 2 years of skilled trades experience in the past 5 years.

3. Canadian Experience Class (CEC)

For workers with Canadian work experience. Requires at least 1 year of skilled work in Canada in the past 3 years.

• Education: max 150 points
• Language — first language: max 136 points
• Canadian work experience: max 80 points
• Provincial nomination: +600 points
• Canadian job offer: +50 or +200 points

2026 Draw Types

• General draws (all programs) — recent cutoffs 480–530
• Category-based draws (healthcare, STEM, trades, transport, French language) — often 430–490
• PNP-linked draws

Application Steps

1. Take an IELTS or CELPIP language test
2. Get an Educational Credential Assessment (ECA) if you studied outside Canada
3. Create an Express Entry profile on IRCC website
4. Receive an Invitation to Apply (ITA) in a draw
5. Submit complete PR application within 60 days of ITA
