LMIA Fees (2026)
- Standard fee: CAD $1,000 per position
- Agriculture stream: No fee
- Seasonal Agricultural Worker Program: No fee
Processing Times (2026)
- Agricultural stream: 2–10 business days
- Global Talent Stream: 10 business days (guaranteed)
- High-wage stream: 65–85 business days
- Low-wage stream: 55–75 business days
- In-Home Caregiver: 7–9 months
2026 update: LMIA validity reduced to 6 months from date of issue.
Employer Application Process
- Advertise the position — genuine recruitment on Job Bank and two other channels for at least 4 weeks
- Complete LMIA application — submit to ESDC with business documents and recruitment evidence
- Await ESDC decision — positive or negative LMIA issued
- Provide LMIA number to worker — 7-digit reference number plus offer letter
Common LMIA Exemptions
- Intra-company transfers
- CUSMA/USMCA trade agreement workers
- Significant benefit to Canada (researchers, artists)
- Open work permits (spousal, post-graduation)
