Eligibility
- Legally married to or in a civil partnership with a UK citizen or settled person
- Sponsor must be at least 18 years old
- Both parties must genuinely intend to live together in the UK
Financial Requirement (Updated 2026)
The minimum income threshold is now £29,000 per year (increased from £18,600 in April 2024). Further increases are planned — always check the current UKVI website. If income is insufficient, savings of at least £16,000 held for 6 months may supplement.
English Language Requirement
You must demonstrate A1 English level via an approved test or by holding a degree taught in English, or being a national of a majority English-speaking country.
Required Documents
- Valid passport
- Marriage or civil partnership certificate
- Evidence of genuine relationship (photos, communications, joint financial documents)
- Sponsor payslips and employment letter showing income
- Tuberculosis test results (if required for your country)
Application Fees and Process
- Complete online application via UKVI portal
- Pay visa fee (£1,538 for outside UK applications) plus Immigration Health Surcharge
- Book biometric appointment and submit documents
- Receive decision — typically within 12 weeks
Route to Settlement
Initial grant: 30 months. Extension: further 30 months. After 5 years: apply for Indefinite Leave to Remain. After 12 more months: eligible for British citizenship.
